Halton
Fresh Food Box
This is a programme which provides fruits and vegetables, chosen in
season and packed in a returnable plastic bin. The boxes are then delivered to
various drop sites in Halton.
As much local produce as possible is used and due to bulk buying, the
cost is considerably less than would be the case, if bought at a retail level.
The produce is of high quality and varies each month. Included in the box are
instructions on how to store and recipes on how to cook the various items that
have been packed. All this is intended to encourage families to eat
nutritiously.
The target populations are those on low incomes, working poor and seniors
as well as young families. The programme, however, is available to all, there
are no restrictions.
Recipients pay for the box at the beginning of each month and receive it
in the third week of the month. This programme has been well received throughout
Halton. Packing takes place at St. Christopher’s Anglican Church just prior to
delivery. The programme is funded in part by The Regional Municipality of
Halton and Choices 4 Health.
We would very much like you to publicize this information. Perhaps you
are aware of needy families for whom you would like to subsidize a box. We are
also in need of volunteers on the third Tuesday of each month for packing,
checking and moving boxes, as well as van drivers to deliver to the drop sites.
If you can volunteer, please contact Anne Hay at 905-634-2852
